Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic — What's the Difference?
If you've been researching garage floor coatings, you've probably seen both of these terms thrown around. Here's the short version: they're both resin-based coatings that bond to concrete, but they cure differently and perform differently over time.
Epoxy
Epoxy is the workhorse of floor coatings. It's been used in commercial and industrial settings for decades. It goes on thick, bonds aggressively to concrete, and provides excellent coverage.
- How it works: Two-part system (resin + hardener) that chemically reacts when mixed. Once mixed, you have a limited working time before it begins to harden.
- Cure time: Slower cure — typically 12–24 hours between coats, and 2–3 days before vehicle traffic.
- UV stability: Standard epoxies can yellow or amber over time when exposed to direct sunlight (like near a garage door). This is cosmetic — it doesn't affect performance.
- Best for: Budget-conscious projects, interior spaces with limited UV exposure, or as a base coat under a polyaspartic top coat.
Polyaspartic
Polyaspartic is a newer, more advanced coating technology. Think of it as epoxy's tougher, faster-curing cousin. It was originally developed for bridge decks and highway infrastructure, so it's built to handle serious abuse.
- How it works: Also a two-part system, but it uses a different chemical reaction (aliphatic polyurea) that cures much faster and produces a harder, more flexible film.
- Cure time: Much faster — can often be recoated in 2–4 hours. Full system can be completed in 1–2 days vs. 3+ days for epoxy.
- UV stability: Fully UV stable — it won't yellow, even in direct sunlight. Your floor will look the same in year five as it did on day one.
- Best for: Garages, outdoor areas, high-traffic zones, or anyone who wants maximum durability and the fastest return to use.
The Bottom Line
Neither coating is "better" in every situation — it depends on your budget, timeline, and how the space will be used. That's why we offer systems that use epoxy only, polyaspartic only, or a combination of both. Most of our customers go with the Premium system (epoxy base + polyaspartic top) because it gives you the best of both worlds at a mid-range price.
Our Process: From Bare Concrete to Finished Floor
A floor coating is only as good as the prep work underneath it. That's why we spend more time preparing your concrete than actually applying the coating. Here's exactly what happens when our crew shows up.
Floor Assessment
We inspect your concrete for cracks, spalling, moisture issues, and previous coatings. This tells us exactly what repairs are needed and which system will perform best on your floor.
Diamond Grinding
We use commercial diamond grinders to remove the top layer of concrete and create a rough surface profile. This is what allows the coating to mechanically bond to the concrete — without it, the coating will peel. This step also removes old paint, glue, and surface contaminants.
Crack & Joint Repair
Any cracks, divots, or spalled areas are filled with a two-part polyurea or epoxy filler and ground smooth. Expansion joints are addressed based on your floor's needs — some are filled, others are left to allow natural movement.
Base Coat Application
The first layer of coating is rolled or squeegeed onto the prepared concrete. This is the foundation of the system — it fills the pores of the concrete and creates a chemical bond. If you've chosen a flake finish, decorative flakes are broadcast into this layer while it's still wet.
Top Coat Application
Once the base coat has cured, a clear or tinted top coat is applied. This final layer seals everything in, provides UV protection, chemical resistance, and the glossy or satin finish you see in the final product.
Cure & Walkthrough
The floor needs time to fully harden. We'll let you know exactly when it's safe for foot traffic (typically 24 hours) and vehicle traffic (2–5 days depending on the system). Before we leave, we walk you through care instructions so your floor lasts for years.
Why Prep Matters
The #1 reason floor coatings fail is poor surface preparation. Big-box store kits skip this step — they have you acid etch the floor and roll on a thin layer of coating. That might look okay for a few months, but it won't hold up. Professional diamond grinding creates a surface profile that the coating physically locks into, which is why our floors last 10–20+ years instead of peeling in the first winter.

Pool Deck Coatings
Resurface your pool deck with H&C® DURA-TOP™ Concrete Resurfacer — a dual-component cementitious overlay that turns worn, cracked, or plain concrete into a beautiful, slip-resistant surface. We mix the texture with H&C DURA-TOP™ Texture Resin and hopper-gun it across your slab, building a strong, abrasion-resistant deck that stands up to sun, water, and pool chemicals for years. Choose how it gets its color: an integral color pack mixed straight into the texture, or a rolled topcoat in any Sherwin-Williams shade — with H&C® Cool Feel® available as a premium upgrade for a cooler walking surface.
Two Ways to Finish
Both share the same H&C DURA-TOP texture base — the difference is how color is applied.
Integral Color Pack
A pre-blended H&C DURA-TOP™ Color Pack is mixed straight into the texture during application. The color is built into the surface itself — no separate topcoat needed.
- Look: Earth-toned, slightly mottled — color is part of the texture, not a layer on top of it.
- Wear: Won't show scratches or wear-through the way a thin topcoat can.
- Color range: Choose from H&C's curated set of color-pack tones.
- Best for: A natural, broken-in concrete look that ages gracefully.
Rolled Topcoat
We install the texture in its natural gray, let it cure, then roll on a tinted topcoat in any Sherwin-Williams color you choose. Wider color range — and the topcoat can be refreshed later without redoing the texture.
- Look: Solid, even, saturated color — closer to a painted finish.
- Refresh: Topcoat can be reapplied down the road to renew color or change it entirely.
- Color range: Any Sherwin-Williams color, or the H&C Cool Feel® standard palette below.
- Best for: Specific color matches — pairing with house trim, pool tile, or a designer palette.
- Slip resistance: Optional H&C® SharkGrip® additive can be mixed into the final topcoat for extra grip — without changing the color (see below).
H&C® DURA-TOP™ Color Pack Options
28 integral colors mixed straight into the texture
Premium Upgrade: H&C® Cool Feel®
Upgrade your topcoat to H&C® Cool Feel® — a self-crosslinking acrylic finish with Comfort Step Technology™ that reduces surface temperature in direct sun, so bare feet and paws stay comfortable poolside. It's also stain-resistant, UV-protected, and built to withstand pool chemicals. Choose a Cool Feel standard color below, or have it tinted at Sherwin-Williams to match any color in their lineup.
H&C® Cool Feel® Standard Colors
25 standard finishes — or have Cool Feel tinted to any Sherwin-Williams color
Optional Add-On: H&C® SharkGrip® Slip-Resistant Additive
The textured DURA-TOP base coat already grips well wet or dry. For rolled topcoats — especially around pools where the deck stays wet, shaded areas where water lingers, or homes with kids and pets — we can mix in H&C® SharkGrip®, a micronized polymer that increases the topcoat's coefficient of friction without changing its color or feel. It's a slip-resistance enhancer (the manufacturer is honest that it's not a hard non-skid coating), and we recommend it as a default for most pool deck topcoats.
